The Spirit of Reciprocity

“I think that the most we can ever do, really, is to walk partway across the bridge toward another person and feel humbled that we get to be there at all.”

~Michelle Obama, The Light We Carry.

Reciprocity is an important principle for the Inside Outside Retreat Centre. We understand that at its core reciprocity is more than just simple exchange. It’s about mutual recognition, mutual respect and mutual responsibility. It’s recognizing the inherent value in every interaction.

And it’s an essential, pivotal component of our gatherings and how we hold space for each other.

Reciprocity: an online micro retreat

In our next Sunday morning micro retreat we’ll reflect on this spirit of reciprocity. We’ll explore what it would mean to truly embody reciprocity in our lives, both individually and collectively, and how it can enhance our relationships. We’ll ponder how the spirit of reciprocity informs our relationship to the living world.

We’ll turn to short texts from Robin Wall Kimmerer, Rebecca Solnit and Ada Limon to prompt our reflections. Simple, gentle guidelines will support a trustworthy space for small and whole group conversations.

We hope you can join us, walk part way across the bridge, and let your story meet ours.

We are settlers on Treaty 13 Land, the traditional territories of many Indigenous Nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are committed to honouring the history this land bears witness to, responding to the 94 Calls to Action of the  Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and walking lightly on the Earth. A portion of proceeds from all our offerings are sent to:  The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and The Nii’kinaaganaa Foundation.
